UNIBEN HOSTEL UPDATE: Temporary Accommodation Deadline Gets a New Date; Read More!!

In line with the agitations and yearnings of the Students, the School management through the Dean of Students, Professor Benson Osadolor have extended the deadline for the vocation of the temporary Hostel accommodation by one week which is the 6th of November 2016.

Here is an official statement from the Students' Union Government Public Relations Officer...

Greetings amiable UNIBEN INTELLECTUALS, trust your night was perfect.
We sincerely appropriate you for keeping faith in the SAFE IMPACT EXCO. We are not unaware of the recent challenges we have been facing as regards accommodation issues.
In lieu of that, a very bold step was taking to extend the vacation from TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION.
Hence, Sunday 6th, Nov. Has been slated as the proposed date for vacation of Temporary Accommodation as the release of next Hostel list is not out yet.
For those of us who do not have Bed Space yet, please lets be calm as we all await the next list.
Stay Blessed!!

UNIBEN HOSTEL MATTERS: SUG Please Intervene, Uniben Students Cries Out; Read Full Details!!

GOOD MORNING GREAT MINDS

It has come to my notice from different students, that there is a memo that ask dem to leave d temporary hostel on Monday.. These students were hoping to see a new hostel allocation list dis week but to no avail. This simply means that by on Monday, so many students we be render homeless, having no where to stay..

I use this medium to call on the SUG to meet with the school management to extend the memo until a new hostel allocation list is out, so as to save the students who are yet to have hostel space of being hopeless of where to stay..

I so much blv dat SUG IMPACT EXCOS led by comr. Obakpolor Lauretta are proactive and they have the interest of the students at heart....

Plss!!! Something should be done with immediate effect..

Long live UNIBEN
Long live SUG
Long live the STUDENTS

from IYEKEKPOLOR CLIFFORD EFOSA(ICE)

Another Student As This To Say...

AM HIGHLY ANNOYED AND DEEPLY PAINED IN MY HEART

After a circular has been released that the second batch of hostel allocation will be released before the end of the week, today the list is nowhere to be found*

When they released a circular on the vacation of those in temporary spaces,i thought may be the next day of Friday, the list will be released

If at all we are going to throw an Aluta movement, it is only those who have not been allocated spaces that will turn up for the movement and the worst of it is that it is so disheartening that majority of those who were given hostel spaces were not persons who are in high need of the spaces cause all over school whattsap group forum, people are advertising spaces to sell there by making the economy tougher for the students

Am not going to say much anyway until I see the actions of the sug and management response by Monday..

Let us watch carefully cause if them drive our students them from temporary accommodation on Monday and them no release satisfactory 2nd list, yawa and Aluta bomb must occur in high capacity

Innocent Nigeria students must arise in struggle for a just course*

Two Uniben Students Selected For Obama's Leadership Training; Read Full Story!!

Two students from the University of Benin
(UNIBEN), have been selected to participate in the
President Barrack Obama’s Young African
Leaders Initiative (YALI) training.
They are Imadojiemu Osetohanmhen Marietta
and Uwoghiren Ogbemudia Eddy. Both are
currently medical students. While Marietta is in
her final year, Eddy is a 400 level student and
writes for The Guardian Campusnews. Both were
selected from a pool of over 20, 000 applications
across West Africa.
Speaking to Campusnews, Eddy said: “I commend
President Obama for instituting the leadership
programme to help develop African Youths. This
is my first time of applying for the training. Over
the years, I have always been scared because I
have heard stories of how competitive the
selection process is. This year, I decided to face
my fear and was selected after series of reviews
and online interview on skype.”
While Eddy will be receiving training in public
management, Marietta will be trained in business
and entrepreneurship.The five-week all expense
paid training, which is expected to hold at Ghana
Institute of Management and Public
Administration (GIMPA), Accra, will bring
together 100 youths selected across West Africa. It
will run from November 7 to December 9, 2016.
YALI is a flagship programme of President Barack
Obama of the United States of America. It aims at
investing in African youth to develope their
immediate environment and ultimately
transforms Africa.

A UNIBEN Student Takes a Trip Down Ekosodin Lane; Read Full Story!!

Ekosodin.. Ekosodin
The Nigerian Iraqi zone

How great men art fallen in thy streets.
How precious destinies have ended in thy stalls
The dirge people raise up at the funeral of your victims are heart wrenching.

There they are,
Dark hooded fellows waiting,
Different colours and banners flying,
Assorted weapons hidden,
All waiting at every corner to make trouble.

oboy show
baby show
Subtle whistle calls to unsuspecting victims.

Like a rattlesnake, they strike.
Carting away all valuables
Leaving behind a stunned victim with a face peppered with hot slaps.

Ekosodin.
The den of Strong men.
Too old to remember their admission dates.
Too fearful of facing life outside the small village.

At every hostel they wait.
Long term tenants overdue for eviction.
The landlords agent comes knocking.
A distinguished lawyer in his own right.

The landlord said you people should pa.
The words froze in his lips.
For sight of the gun was enough to shut him up.

Landlord say make una take good care of the hostel
Quickly changing the content of the message meant to be delivered.
Who could blame him?
For a wife and three kids awaited his return home.

To the primary school field I went.
Hoping to enjoy a bit of banter among social gathering.
The shirtless team was winning and the game tempo building.

Midway through the game,
A harsh tackle ensued against a shirtless player.

The referee feigned ignorance.
The spectators maintained their silence.
The shirtless team maintained remarkable muteness.

They all knew who the referee was.
I did not.

There I was.
Yelling with a maddening roar at the injustice ignored.

A side step, two side steps,
Friends around had began to distance themselves from my location.

The referee blew a halt to the match.
In short strides undertaken with dwarvish legs,
He raced down to my location.

Who you be
He asked.
Blurting our the most idiotic question I thought anyone should ask.
For I was a Jew in the country of Rome
And a spectator in the midst of initiates.

Well, I am kosilala for your information
I replied while lacing the words with an exuberant tone.
For I thought he was just another student.

Within a fraction of a second,
An eclipse occurred before my eyes.
For the afternoon sun became obscured by a dark cloud.
Bright stars appeared in my vision that moment.
And the chirping sounds of birds around became more audible.

Two more slaps followed in quick succession.
Two more tsunamis that eroded my calm and beautiful face.
Two more hands in my pocket relieved me of my new phone.

A baptism of fire,
I called it in narration to friends afterwards.

Your first lecture in Ekoso 111,
My roommate called it.
And the second lecture came that Saturday.

At the viewing center I sat,
A yearning expectation swelling in my heart.
With a win from Manchester United over Arsenal,
My betslip winnings of #4000 would be guaranteed.

So the match began.
Rooney bumped in the first goal.
Danny Welbeck supplied the second.
Ashley Young added a third with a sublime curling R2 goal.
And the floodgates slammed shut at Seven-nil.

Ecstatic described my state.
Wilding jumping and hugging unknown strangers.
For winning in football always elicits a joy universally shared.

While exiting the door,
The minions gripped my hands.
And with unspoken threat escorted me to the lair of oga at the top.

Oga was very angry with me.
For he was a fan of the loosing Arsenal side.
And my jubilation had inflamed the sadness in him.

In the middle of the slapping and kicking session,
My orientation changed.

Whilst spending my last #2000 buying beer for everyone around,
My support for Manchester United rescinded.
And my dire love for the gunners was born.

With deep seated thanks I hail thee.
For my fears you heightened
And my belief in God you strengthened.

To Him I ran to secure me.
For I could do nothing to secure myself from the chairmen.

In God's presence I found true peace.
And in His word I found true wisdom to moderate my associations within that dreaded place called Ekosodin..#LORENZO

7 Reasons Why The Pending UNIBEN Admission List is An Advantage To All Aspirants; Read More!!

As we all know Uniben Admission list is not out yet as at the time of typing this... But I am going to share a few advantage the aspirant have.

1. We all know that it's only 100lvl students that aren't receiving Lectures, this is to tell you that the school assumes everybody have started lectures(Proof is where the Vice Chancellor welcomed the Freshers in the homepage). So therefore, you have to look for materials and start jacking -carry over in year one is real!

2. GATHER YOUR KUDI, Eco (Money) ...They know what they are doing that's why they released acceptance fee payment details early for you to prepare!... So the awaiting time is to think about where you or your parents can get money that is for middle and third class citizens even the rich, first class citizen are even ravaged by economic melt down too!

3. BUSY- i saw some post talking about some unreasonable things they will use their time for, with these time you can aquire basic skills to keep you going in school, you can learn skills that have short duration such as hair dressing, computer operation, making of snacks etc so learn something! Darwin said "it's only the fittest can survive" get experience by being busy especially the ajebos!

4. This might sound funny but learn how to COOK! When you check some student's provision you might be shock because you will see more of noodles because thats what they can cook; they also make a budget where they will spend alot of money in a canteen!

5. Learn the way you comprehend most! Most student understand by reading in the night, some learn by individual reading others by attending classes... So this is a time for you to learn how you comprehend.

6. Review what you are going to do there! Don't be surprise many need this admission because they want to leave their house (why not marry instead!- am not encouragng early marriage mind you)... Know why you're going there.

7. Know your selling point! This is a time for you to know where your course will take you to! The most ridiculed courses are in the BMS
No offence intended (exception of a few like Nursing, Medical Lab. Physiotherapy, Radiography) most BMS graduate want to drag space with doctors in the hospital and they get ridiculed; meanwhile they have space in other place... What I am trying to say is this, this is the time were you know where your course will lead you to!

NOTE: You don't need them but they need you, just relax they will paste your names!

UNIBEN Student Writes a Short Poem On "The Other Room"; See Full Poem!!

BEAUTIFUL POEM ON THE OTHER ROOM

THE OTHER ROOM...

The other room
Where a woman pretends
To be weak
So that a man
Can believe he is strong
Where a woman pretends
To be foolish
So that a man
Can say he is wise
Where a woman stoops
So that a man can conquer.

The other room
Where gods of men
Become worshipers of women
Where leaders of thought
Become minions
Of the bleeders of blood
Where wielders of power
Succumb to power.

The other room
Where the brashness of testosterone
Yields to the bra straps of estrogen
Where the bravado of masculinity
Is tamed by the wiles of femininity
Where the turgid
Becomes the flaccid

Three rooms
In a house
One in which a man
Believes he is king
Two in which
He realizes
A woman is god!
Hmmmmmm!

The Other Room

In the other room
Hardened men become beggars
The queen becomes the king too
The king, just a beggarly page

In the other room
We cry for joy
Beg to be injured
For there, we enjoy pain

In the other room
We beg to suck milkless breasts
Accept every proposal
And promise any thing

In the other room
Fate of nations are decided
Destinies of men are fixed
Death warrants are signed

The other room
What a room! "

Mistakes That Affects Students Performance In UNIBEN

MISTAKES THAT AFFECT OUR PERFORMANCE IN UNIBEN

You may think that you're no longer a fresher!
I bet you're a victim of one or two of what you're going to read right now.

Many Uniben students after gaining admission proceed to make certain stupid mistakes. Some of these silly mistakes are as a result of what they think was wise to do. These mistakes actually go a long way to affect them physically, psychologically, academically and even emotionally. As a result, most of them end the session with GP less than 3.0 on a scale of 5.0.

The mistakes discussed below are not exclusive to 100 level students. However, it has greater effects on them.

1. NO PROPER GUIDE

Many Uniben students in their first year live as if they were the first persons to get admitted. Immediately they see their names in the admission list, they feel that is all. They do not ask questions about the school, their department or course of study. They also fail to realize that it is what they have in their head that takes them ahead in school.

Uniben is not called UNISTRESS for nothing. Many Uniben students are facing challenges in their penultimate level as a result of what they didn’t know in 100L. For you not to experience the challenges your senior students are facing, you must know what they didn’t know. You need to be properly guided.

2. SAYING YES TO DISTRACTIONS

Distraction is one of the main things advertised in Uniben. The distractions come in different dimensions. This makes it more difficult to identify. In Uniben, distractions come in form of:

Social activities
Pretty girls and handsome boys
Parasitic relationship

Prioritize your time so as to accomplish the tasks that produce the best result for your academics. You cannot stop distractions from coming your way. However, you can choose not to be distracted.

3. SOCIAL LIFE

This mistake is not perculiar to Uniben students. As a student, you want to make friends and associate with every one you come across. You want to attend all the shows to show that you have arrived. Have you forgotten that who you follow determines what follows you? it does. Uniben is a federal University and as a result admits students from different tribes and background. This is a good reason why you should be selective in your choice of friends. Many students are still regretting their choice of friends. Be warned!

4. SKIPPING CLASSES

Who class help? this is the language of Uniben students. Uniben Engineering students are mostly guilty of this. The truth is that, classes may not help you in 100L. However, if you cultivate this habit in 100L, it will be very difficult for you to leave. This will in-turn harm you in second year of study. If class isn’t helping you, then what is helping you in school?

5. WAITING FOR THE EXAM TO BE CLOSE

Uniben calender is currently moving at the speed of sound. If you don’t prepare with the speed of light, the exam date will come as a flash to you. Many Uniben students especially in their first year shake hands with procrastination, forgetting the fact that it has crippled their senior colleagues. Uniben exams usually come as surprise to those who are not prepared; they are no jokes. Start preparing as early as possible.

6. PAYING MORE ATTENTION TO DRESSING

This is very common with Law and Management science students. They iron clothes for five hours daily and move round to impress the opposite sex. Their starched clothes can tear your skin. If you wanna see them, go to faculty car park. You are in school to study and develop yourself, not for beauty show. Don’t carry shinning body with empty brain. Invest in your personality.

7. HANGING AROUND JUNE 12 ALL NIGHT

Many Uniben students waste precious time in June 12 doing things that do not add value to their life. There are better things to do than to waste time. Remember, killing time is not murder but suicide.

8. GOING TO NIGHT CLASS IN GROUP

Uniben students are fond of going to night classes in group. They spend more time discussing and less time studying. This imparts their academic performance negatively. Do not follow crowd to night class. Make every second of your stay in night class count. If possible, avoid reading in your department, or where people know you (that'll reduce handshakes and greetings).

9. KNOW IT ALL ATTITUDE

Many uniben students feel they know it all. They feel too proud to ask questions. What you do not know is senior to you. Humble yourself and learn. In fact, if you are too proud, you become too heavy for people to carry along. Keep calm and learn soft work.

10. NOT TAKING GST COURSES SERIOUS

Many Uniben students do not take GST courses serious. For some, it is very easy so they can read it a day to the exam. For others, they hate GST with passion.

The believe that general studies courses do not add to CGPA has been thoroughly debunked. The fact remains that GST add to your GPA and should be taken very serious. The rate at which 100L Uniben students fail GST courses has assumed a gargantuan proportion.

In conclusion, you can’t graduate from Uniben without passing all your General studies courses. The earlier you understand this, the better for you.

11. NOT STAYING IN HOSTEL

Personally, I will not advice any Uniben 100L student to stay outside hostel. Some of the benefits of staying in hostel are:

Proximity to class
You get first hand information
You get motivated the more
Enabling environment to mingle with students from other departments and faculties
Less comfort and distractions

12. PLEASING EVERYONE

Some Uniben students find it difficult to say no. They feel, “If I refuse to go out with him, what will he say”. Do not let the fear of what people would say make you swim in the ocean of indecision. Know what you like and what you do not like. Also, know what works best for you. Be yourself…

NUC Scraps Pre-Degrees, Diplomas in Universities

Pre-degree and diploma programmes
in Nigerian universities have been
scrapped. The National Universities
Commission (NUC), which took the
action, instructed them to leave the
running of such programmes for
polytechnics and concentrate effort on
producing human capital in the core
undergraduate, part-time and post-
graduate courses.
Executive Secretary of the commission,
Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, gave
this order at meetings held between
October 10 and 12 with vice
chancellors of the 143 universities in
the country, according to a statement
by the NUC yesterday.
He also directed that the research
directorate of NUC be strengthened to
work with those of universities. This is
to co-ordinate research activities in
universities and ensure relevance of
their outputs. He said the NUC, would
engage a mix of old, experienced and
young vibrant academics to come up
with curricula that would not only be
dynamic and responsive to national
needs, but also conform to global
trends.
The statement continued: “A
comprehensive review of the entire
university curricula (the Benchmark
Minimum Academic Standards
(BMAS)) and ranking of Nigerian
universities have also been scheduled
for 2017, while two of the cardinal
activities of the commission,
accreditation of programmes and
resource verification, will now take
place only twice and thrice a year,
respectively: May and November for
accreditation as well as March, July
and December for resource
verification.”
NUC also warned that any university
that failed to present its programmes
for accreditation promptly without
satisfactory reasons, given well in
advance, would be denied same and
the relevant agencies (JAMB and NYSC)
duly notified.
“The accreditation of part-time
programmes would ensure that they
are of the same quality as the full-time
programmes, thereby restoring public
confidence in them,” it said.
Rasheed urged universities to identify
their areas of strength to mount joint
Ph.D. programmes in view of
increasing cost of training overseas.
He enjoined the vice chancellors to be
creative and innovative enough to
come up with new courses and
programmes that would address
emerging societal challenges.
He expressed NUC’s readiness to work
with them to develop the BMAS for
such new programmes.

JAMB Scraps The Use of Scratch Cards; See Details!!

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board has scrapped the use of scratch
cards in any of its transactions and
services, describing it as “archaic”, its
Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Is-haq
Oloyede, has announced.
He also demanded that the Federal
Government should revert to the former
system where serving Vice Chancellors of
Universities were made chairmen of the
Governing Board of JAMB.
A statement issued by the Spokesperson
of JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, obtained by
THE PUNCH on Sunday, said, Oloyede
made the announcement in Abuja in a
paper he delivered during a meeting of the
Association of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian
Universities.
According to him, JAMB would be using
the platform of pin vending to check all
forms of fraudulent practices which was
prevalent with the use of scratch cards.
“The decision is as a result of its
consistent subjection to fraudulent
practices, the use of scratch cards is
archaic and it is the drive by JAMB to also
promote accountability in line with
government’s zero tolerance for corruption.
This new system will be accessible through
the options of web payment, ATM issued
cards (Visa, verve and Mastercard), online
quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller
mobile application and Bank Branch case/
card”, he said.
Oloyede said years ago, the understanding
was that only serving Vice-Chancellors
were made chairmen of Governing Board
of JAMB.
While appealing that government should go
back to the practice from inception,
Oloyede added that since the agency is a
creation of the Committee of Vice-
Chancellors, it would only be proper for
them to be clearly recognised as active
stakeholders to avoid any acrimony
between tertiary institutions and JAMB.
He believed that going back to the old
practices would “engender good synergies
and harmonious relationship with a view to
effectively delivering on its mandates.”
Oloyede recalled that for almost two
decades, specifically between 1977 and
1993, only serving Vice-Chancellors were
made Chairmen of the Board of JAMB,
from Prof Oladipo Akinkugbe, VC University
of Ilorin; Prof Donald E.U Ekong, VC
University of Port Harcourt; Prof Adamu
Baike, VC University of Benin; Prof Mahdi
Adamu, VC University of Sokoto and Prof
Isa Mohammed, VC University of Abuja.
He said, “This practice which promoted
harmony and quality inputs on the Board’s
matriculation activities have since been
forgotten or neglected. The appointment of
the chairman of the Board could be
restricted to only heads of tertiary
institutions in Nigeria perhaps in rotational
basis among the Vice-Chancellor of
Universities, Rectors of Polytechnics,
Monotechnics and Provosts of Colleges of
Education.

Call For a Meeting With The Students' Union Leaders Within 24 Hours Or....UNIBEN S. U. G.

It is with utmost disappointment that we write to the school management of the blatant disregard for the welfare of UNIBEN Students on the parts of the Dean of Students for failing to make adequate preparations for the accommodation of UNIBEN Students.

We therefore call on our amiable Vice Chancellor to mandate the Students' Affairs Division through the Dean of Students to forthwith;

1. Provide Students with reliable Information as regards the Hostel Application
2. Make all payments payable online
3. Ensure that Hostel Application begins properly
4. To call for a meeting with the Students' Union leaders within 24 hours

Failure to heed to the above, the Students' Union Government leaders should not be held liable for whatever becomes of the peace of the University Community as Students are already agitating for protest to register their displeasure

Attached to this update are Bulletins from the Office of the Dean of Students confirming the fact that adequate preparations was not and has not yet been made to provide Students with accommodation.
